Update

The process for an update or maintenance depends on the initial version and the installation type:

  • Upgrade to OPC Router 5—migrating from OPC Router 3 and 4: using the same project database instead of a migration tool, export and import as an alternative method, and what happens to embedded passwords during the process.
  • Update process for Windows – within the 5 series: uninstall the old version, install the new one; project data and settings are preserved.
  • Update process for Docker – within the 5 series: remove the old container and recreate it with a new image; data is preserved only for persisted mount paths.

Important Update Notice: Back Up Your Project and System

Before updating OPC Router, it is crucial to ensure the security of your project data and system configurations. We strongly recommend that you follow these steps:

  1. Project Backup: Back up all your OPC Router projects. Export the configurations and store them in a secure location. This step ensures that you can revert to the original settings and configurations in case of complications during the update process.
  2. System backup: In addition to backing up your projects, it is advisable to back up the entire system. Use standardized IT mechanisms such as VM snapshots or other system backup solutions available in your infrastructure. A complete system backup allows you to perform a full recovery to the state prior to the update in an emergency, ensuring business continuity and data integrity.

By taking these precautions, you minimize the risk of data loss and system failures that may occur during or after the update process. Your diligence during this phase supports a smooth transition to the new features and enhancements of the OPC Router and protects your investment in your automation solutions.

Tip: How to Create a Backup of Your OPC Router Configuration

Use the OPC Router’s backup function to create a backup copy of your configuration database. To do so, proceed as follows:

  1. Open the menu via “File” and select “Create Backup”.
  2. The system automatically saves a backup file in the “Backup” folder, which is located in the OPC Router’s installation directory.
  3. The backup file name includes the date and time to facilitate easy identification and organization. For example: 20210130_153047_OPCRouterConfiguration.bak.

Updating Redundancy Pairs Together

The project synchronization requires that the primary and secondary services have the same version, including the build number. Therefore, plan to update a redundancy pair for both systems simultaneously—synchronization will no longer start if the versions differ.
